How the estimate is calculated

The calculator puts two totals side by side over the same period: running the monitoring stack yourself, and a Bleemeo subscription for the same servers. Every assumption it makes is listed here, so you can swap ours for your own figures.

Engineering time

Every day of work is valued at €450. Installing the stack takes 9 days plus 0.1 day per monitored server — 6 more with Kubernetes, 4 more with containers — and is redone with each hardware generation. Keeping it running takes 12 days a year plus 0.1 day per server, and the same Kubernetes or container increment. Project management adds 2 days plus 0.01 day per server, and documentation 1 day per generation.

Cloud infrastructure

A pair of EC2 instances for high availability, running around the clock, priced from an m5.xlarge and doubling at 500, 1,000 and 2,000 servers. Storage is EBS at €0.11 per GB and month: 6 GB per monitored server on each instance for Prometheus, 10 GB in total for the other tools.

On-premise hardware

Two Dell PowerEdge R340 servers for high availability, €3,500 to €4,800 each depending on the fleet size, replaced every 3 years. Each generation needs 1 day of racking and setup, repairs take 5 days a year, and power and cooling cost €35 and €35 per server and month.

Alerting

Self-managed alerting is counted as SMS, whose cost grows with the fleet: €50 × (1 + ln(servers)) a year. The Bleemeo mobile app sends push notifications instead, so that line is zero on its side.

Bleemeo

The subscription and nothing else: €10.99 per server and month on the Professional plan, whichever tool you compare with. A reserved-capacity commitment of 12, 24 or 36 months takes 10, 15 or 20% off, and the calculator shows that price too. There is no infrastructure line, because there is nothing to host.

It is an order of magnitude, not a quote. Your own day rate, cloud discounts, hardware you already own or the time it takes to roll the agent out all change the result — each line of the breakdown shows its formula, so you can redo it with your figures.

Cost calculator FAQ

Why is self-managed monitoring so expensive for a small fleet?
Most of the self-managed total does not depend on the number of servers. The installation, the high-availability pair and the 12-day base of yearly maintenance cost the same for five servers as for fifty; only 0.1 day a year is added per server, while a subscription is paid per server.
Why does the self-managed side count two servers?
A monitoring system that goes down with the infrastructure it watches cannot tell you about the outage. The calculator therefore assumes a high-availability pair, in the cloud as on premises.
Which Bleemeo plan is the comparison based on?
The Professional plan (€10.99 per server and month), whichever tool you pick: it is the plan with 13 months of retention, containers and logs, the closest match to what a self-managed stack is built to do. The pricing page compares what each plan includes.
Why can Bleemeo cost more than self-hosting for a large fleet?
Because the subscription grows with every server while much of the self-managed cost does not. With our assumptions the two meet somewhere past 200 servers. What the subscription still buys there is the engineering time, the on-call for the monitoring itself and the upgrades — the free audit is the place to weigh that against your own figures.
What if I monitor more than 4,000 servers?
Past 4,000 servers a generic estimate stops being useful, and the calculator asks you to get in touch so we can look at your setup together.
